The Power of Connection: Finding your Mama Tribe

I’ve just returned from the Amalfi Coast, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of a dream. Picture this: vibrant colours, stunning patterns, rich culture, tantalising food, crystal-clear water, mountains rising majestically, and soft sand beneath your feet. It was the perfect setting for a much-needed getaway. Eight of us went on a girl’s trip to celebrate a friend’s birthday—have you ever been on a girl’s trip?

Sometimes, girl trips don’t go the way you expect. You’re dealing with different personalities, some of whom you’ve never met, which can be a bit of a gamble. That’s where I found myself. I was stressed, exhausted, and feeling completely overwhelmed in the lead-up to the trip. Despite the months of planning, I wasn’t at all excited when September rolled around. It’s funny how, when we look into our future, we often imagine ourselves as the super-organised, all-sorted version of ourselves that we aspire to be. Back in April, I was sure I’d have everything under control by September. Spoiler alert: I didn’t.

As the trip approached, I wasn’t just battling the usual workload—I was also feeling insecure and dealing with stress and anxiety as a mum. You know that feeling when life’s pressures start to weigh on you, and suddenly, you’re doubting everything? Add to that, I didn’t even know half of the women on the trip. We’ve all heard those stories of girl trips going sideways, of fallouts and clashing personalities. I wasn’t sure what to expect.

But when I arrived and met the group, all my worries melted away. It turned out to be one of the best holidays I’ve had in years. The women on this trip were high achievers, all brought together by our mutual friend, who had been clever enough to curate a group that shared the same values and outlook on life. Despite being from different countries, it felt like we’d known each other forever. Whether it was managing teenagers, raising children, or juggling careers, we connected right away because of our shared life stages. It was beautiful.

It reminded me of the incredible power of having a support system for mums in your life—women who support you, lift you up, and share your values. If you’re a new mother or a stressed mom feeling overwhelmed, it’s even more important to surround yourself with people who can offer encouragement and advice. When I was feeling stressed and unsure about the trip, it was this circle of women who helped me feel at ease. We often take for granted the importance of building a strong, supportive circle around us, but having people in your corner who understand where you are in life and can truly relate is invaluable.

If you’re struggling with stress or feeling the weight of life’s challenges, know that it’s okay to seek out your mom tribe. I’ve learnt that having a tribe of women who share your experiences and can help you navigate the tough times is crucial. Whether you’re dealing with sleepless nights or feeling uncertain about the future, finding a supportive group of mums can make all the difference.

A friend recently sent me a quote from Stephen Bartlett that really resonated with me. It said, “It’s important to have people you can share bad news with, but it’s even more important to have people who’ve earned the right to hear your good news.” And it’s so true. Not everyone deserves access to the most vulnerable parts of you, especially your triumphs and joys.

So, here’s what I want to leave you with: Be intentional about the people you allow into your life. Build your tribe carefully, and make sure they’re the kind of people who have earned the right to see your soul, in all its raw and unfiltered glory. Whether you’re a new mom looking to make mum friends or simply seeking support, remember that not everyone is worthy of that privilege.
