When to Start Planning Your Baby Nursery

The moment that positive result appears, there is a new beginning. The journey to creating a nursery is one of quiet anticipation. It begins not with a rush of decisions but with a moment of reflection, a pause to consider what this space will mean, not just for your child, but for your home. However, setting up a nursery is rarely as simple as a single shopping trip. With luxury interiors, where furniture is handcrafted rather than mass-produced, time is your most valuable asset. Unlike the high street, where items are picked from a warehouse shelf, a bespoke nursery is commissioned. From the turning of the wood to the curing of the hand-painted finish, true craftsmanship respects the process of creation. This means that leaving your planning until late can lead to unnecessary stress and compromise.

At The Baby Cot Shop, we advocate for a calm, structured approach. By understanding the timeline of production and safety, you can ensure your nursery is not just finished, but perfectly prepared before your baby arrives. Here is our trimester-by-trimester guide to planning your dream space without the rush.

Trimester 1 (Weeks 1–12): The Dreaming Phase

The first few months are often a time of quiet adjustment. If it feels too early to buy, it is the perfect time to plan. This phase is about inspiration and, crucially, space planning. Before falling in love with a specific crib or wardrobe, you must understand the constraints of your room. We recommend measuring the space in detail, noting the position of windows, radiators, and power sockets.

This is the time to create your mood boards. Explore textures, colour palettes, and themes. By defining your vision now, you save valuable time later when the clock starts ticking on production lead times.

Trimester 2 (Weeks 13–27): The Commissioning Phase

As you enter the second trimester, often referred to as the golden window of pregnancy, your energy levels typically return. If you had not, this is the critical moment to move from planning to purchasing. In the luxury sector, standard lead times for bespoke furniture range from 8 to 16 weeks. If you desire custom upholstery for your nursing chair or a specific hand-painted motif on your furniture, these pieces are made to order.

Ordering around the 15-week scan (or earlier) is the sweet spot. It ensures that your furniture is entered into the production schedule with ample buffer time. Waiting until much later often means risking that your essential pieces—like the cot or changing unit—will not arrive before the baby does. Commissioning your furniture now allows you to enjoy the concierge experience of selecting fabrics and finishes at a leisurely pace, rather than making panicked decisions against a deadline.

The Wet Trade Gap (Weeks 28–32)

While your furniture is being crafted by artisans, your focus should shift to the physical preparation of the room. This is the window for the wet trades—painting, wallpapering, and carpet fitting. It is a common mistake to schedule decoration and furniture delivery in the same week. This must be avoided. Fresh plaster, wallpaper paste, and paint release moisture as they dry. Placing solid wood furniture into a room with high humidity can affect the timber.

When you complete the decoration in this window, you ensure the room is dry, clean, and ready for the white-glove delivery team. It also prevents the risk of paint splatters on your new investment pieces.

Trimester 3 (Weeks 33–36): Installation and The Cure

By the time you reach the third trimester, physical mobility becomes more challenging, and the nesting instinct peaks. Your goal should be to have the furniture delivered and assembled by Week 33 to 34 (or earlier). There is a vital safety reason for this timeline: Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).

Even with the highest quality, non-toxic, water-based paints (such as those used in our collections), every new room benefits from an airing out period. Experts recommend a buffer of 2 to 4 weeks between the furniture installation and the baby sleeping in the room. This allows any residual scents from new rugs, packaging, or decor to dissipate fully, ensuring the environment is chemically neutral and fresh for your newborn’s delicate respiratory system.

Week 36 Onwards

Full term is considered 39 weeks. Therefore, the psychological target for a finished nursery is Week 36. If you have followed this timeline, your final weeks of pregnancy can be spent on the joyful details: washing the tiny linens, arranging the changing table with essentials, and packing the hospital bag. There is peace of mind that comes from knowing the room is ready. Whether your baby arrives on their due date or decides to make an early appearance, you have the reassurance that their sanctuary is waiting for them—safe, aired, and beautiful.
