Preparing your baby's nursery is one of the most important decisions a new parent makes. Choosing the right bedding is central to that — not only for the beauty of the space but for your baby's comfort and wellbeing throughout the night.

Babies are unable to regulate their own body temperature, which makes the choice of bedding genuinely important. The right pieces will keep your baby comfortable without overheating, and a well-dressed cot brings its own quiet reassurance.

The guiding principle is simplicity. A sleeping cot should contain only what is necessary; unnecessary items introduce risk rather than comfort.

The Essentials

For a Cot:

  • Fitted sheets
  • Waterproof mattress protector
  • Pillows and duvets — suitable from one year

For a Crib or Moses Basket:

  • Fitted sheets
  • Waterproof mattress protector — if the mattress is not already waterproof

Organic Waterproof Mattress Cover

Waterproof Mattress Protector:

Placed between the mattress and fitted sheet, a waterproof mattress protector keeps the mattress clean and hygienic without compromising breathability. Choose one that allows air to circulate freely through the mattress beneath.

Fitted sheets:

A well-fitted sheet should lie completely flat against the mattress surface, secured at each corner. Always choose the correct size for your cot, crib or Moses basket — a loose sheet is unsafe. Never substitute a flat sheet, as movement during sleep can cause it to come away from the mattress.

Cot Bumper:

At The Baby Cot Shop, our position is straightforward: you will not need a bumper from the outset, and many babies never require one at all.

Bumpers are decorative accessories for the dressed nursery, not sleep-safety products. They are crafted in the same bespoke fabrics and finishes as your wider nursery scheme and are designed to be seen- exquisitely finished and coordinated to complement your interior.

Cot bumpers are not suitable for newborns. If you are considering one, we recommend speaking with your midwife or health visitor beforehand and reading current safe sleep guidance before purchase.

Materials:

Babies have naturally delicate skin, which can be sensitive to certain fabrics and finishes. We recommend choosing bedding made from natural fibres — 100% cotton, linen, silk, or certified organic alternatives — which are gentle against the skin, breathable, and less likely to cause irritation.

At The Baby Cot Shop, all bedding in our collection is made from OEKO-TEX® certified fabrics, independently tested to ensure they are free from harmful substances. It is a standard we hold across every piece we product.
