Meet Tiffany, founder of Tiffany Rose Maternity

We are excited to have coffee with Tiffany founder of Tiffany Rose Maternity, the UK’s most respected online retailer of special occasion maternity wear. tiffany-rose-blog Can you share with us how and why you founded Tiffany Rose? I was inspired by my pregnant sister who was struggling to find a dress to wear to her best friend’s wedding back in 2003.

After entertaining the idea of my own business for a while, I recognised there was a gap in the market for beautiful, high quality, maternity occasion wear.  I wanted to offer pregnant women the chance to look and feel fabulous at any occasion.

With no financial backing (just an investment of just £600 on a credit card), I set about learning graphic design, website development and discovered an amazing UK manufacturer who believed in my idea. They supported me by making very small production runs of my new maternity designs. I haven’t looked back since!

That's impressive! How long have you been in business for?

I started Tiffany Rose in 2003 – so that makes it 15 years!

What do you think is the secret to behind the company’s success?

Tiffany Rose dresses are elegant, glamorous and stylish, yet at the same time extremely comfortable, flattering and wearable.  Pregnant women love Tiffany Rose because there is simply nothing else like it on the market.

We offer a wide range of styles for every special occasion – from formal maternity full-length gowns, evening dresses, nursing styles, stylish day dresses, and our bestselling maternity bridal wear. A new exciting addition this season has been our Verity Maternity Coat in two beautiful colourways, which has proven to be a hit with our customers!

We have been thrilled to dress many celebrities along the way including Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Hollywood star Julia Styles (on her wedding day in a Tiffany Rose bridal gown) and singer, Katherine Jenkins.

We also put a very big focus on excellent customer service. We genuinely care about every customer and our multi-lingual team exceed expectations on all levels. This is very important to us and many of our customers' comments on the Tiffany Rose customer experience in their reviews.

Where are these beautiful clothing pieces made and who designs them?

All of our designs are produced at reputable manufacturing partners across the UK. We’re very proud to be supporting British manufacturing – we have done this from the very beginning and we feel making in Britain is part of our DNA.

I design the collections with the support of my wonderful team. We have a lot of very creative people in the business and so it’s great to work together and hear their ideas. It’s also really important that we listen to our customers, this feedback really steers the direction of each new collection – which styles are their favourites and why, and what they would love to see more of. At the end of the day, we’re designing for our customers!

And where does your inspiration come from?

I am continually inspired by colours and textures around me, whether it’s nature, paintings, fabrics, clothing or interior design. I started my career as an assistant to interior designer, Nina Campbell, and this is when I realised my love for textiles.

We are very lucky to work with incredibly creative fabric mills both in the UK and Europe who work hard to develop new fabrics and colour treatments all the time, and they are very keen to show us all of their new designs, which in itself is incredibly inspiring.

What’s your favourite Tiffany Rose piece?

Gosh, this changes all the time! At the moment I think my favourite is the Aria Gown in Aquatic Ombré. It’s so dramatic! I love the design of this dress, the off-the-shoulder elegance and the stunning digital ombré print. Wear this and you’ll definitely make an entrance.

Congratulations on Winning The Queen's Award for International Trade, again! What’s next for Tiffany Rose?

Oh thank you! It’s incredibly exciting for any business to have this type of recognition, and we are so thrilled and proud to have received this award once again.

We have lots of plans for Tiffany Rose, which includes continuing our expansion in the USA. At the beginning of the year we partnered with leading department store Nordstrom which has been hugely successful. We are next month launching with premium retailer Neiman Marcus and we’re looking forward to announcing more partnerships next year.

We’re also thrilled to launch our new plus size maternity bridal range in January – watch this space!

Our sister label, Alie Street, is growing at a fast pace and we have several new collections planned for next year – including some very beautiful and flattering dresses and coats.

On a more personal note, what do you love about your job?

Ah, there are so many parts of my job I love.

It goes without saying I love creating new collections; discovering new fabrics that I think will be perfect for our pregnant customers and then seeing them come to life and hearing feedback from our customers.

Photoshoots are great fun, I love the excitement as well as the physical exhaustion of getting the most out of each day – I wouldn’t miss these for the world.

So much of what we do is rewarding, and I really feel this from the team as well. At the end of the day our job is to offer our customers something they can’t get anywhere else, and to make them feel happy. I think we do this in spades and it’s very motivating for our team members, e.g. customer services, marketing, graphic design etc to feel that we really are delivering. And this in itself makes it a very happy work life for us – and I love that.

Can you tell us what a day in your life looks like?

My husband and I will do the school run together and then arrive at our offices for around 8.30am. (My husband joined me as co-director in 2011).

First thing is a black coffee and catch-up on emails. If it’s a Tuesday then at 9am the entire team will gather in our boardroom for our weekly progress report. A great opportunity to discuss each individuals’ plans for the week, monitor sales in each country and highlight any issues that need addressing.

I’ll then meet with the production team to go through sales trends and stock levels of our bestsellers. We work very closely with our manufacturers and provide them with a constant flow of business, which means we’re able to keep excellent running stocks of all our designs and not disappoint any of our customers.

Later that morning you’ll find me in the design studio, reviewing the latest fabric development samples, checking over new designs samples that are made in-house, and talking through the collection with the team.

I work very closely with our Art Director and so we’ll chat through the latest updates on website design plans, image selection for lookbooks and then brainstorm our next photoshoot for either Tiffany Rose or Alie Street.

Every day there’s always a few meetings, whether a fabric supplier visit, PR update, staff review meeting, celebrity fitting, new collection design brief or creative team brainstorm.

I normally leave the office mid-afternoon so I can collect the kids, hear all about their day as well as ensuring the homework gets done! I really value that special time with them and so any further work I always squeeze in during the evening at home.

What is the best thing that has come out of your work?

I think the best thing is the difference we’re making to peoples’ lives:

Our customers – reading all the wonderful reviews we receive on a daily basis, seeing happy photos in their Tiffany Rose dress and receiving thank you cards in the post!

Our manufacturers – working with them in a way that provides them with assurance and stability – and ultimately providing much-needed support to the British clothing manufacturing industry.

Our team – we have a very special team (both staff and long-term partners) at Tiffany Rose and Alie Street and I feel extremely proud and happy that we are all on this journey together. And I hope they do too!!

How do you spend your downtime?

Playing the piano, yoga, watching movies and country walks.

What do you think are the secrets behind getting to where you’ve got to?

Staying focused, being prepared to adapt, having great people around you and never giving up!
